Welcome Back Kotter

Welcome to my first blog post since I got married and moved half way across the country. Now I used to be a blogger. I started in August 2005 and rarely blogged until Hurricane Katrina and then only to plead for people to give money. Eventually I blogged as a way to get cute comments from my hunny. I actually enjoyed writing about my day, my thoughts, my gripes. So why did I stop? Well I got a little paranoid that people I worked with, or potential employers (when I was job hunting) would find my blog and I'd be dooced. Oh Dooce is this woman who blogged about her job and then got fired. Now I never blogged about my job, or my clients. I did occaisionally blog after a particularly stimulating grad school class, but nothing too salicious. So why am I blogging again, well this time my name is not attached to my blog. So for all anyone knows I could be a 7"2' Inuit in Manitoba, Canada.

I don't know if this will be a fairly regular blog. But I'll try. One thing I am very excited about is I am actually sticking to a fitness routine. Last Saturday I was out at my in-laws and talking to my sister-in-law about how hard it is to get motivated to actually work out. So I decided to motivate myself the way I did in college...with money. I would pick one friend and give her $20 which she would get to keep if I didn't finish a paper, let's say by 10pm that night, or whatever arbitrary time I picked. The bigger the paper, the more money I'd give. What can I say the thought of losing money is the best motivator. So I spoke to my husband and told him that if I fail to exercise at least 10 minutes a day from 4/27/08 until 5/28/08 he gets $200 with which to buy anything he wants. So far it has worked. I know it's only the 5th day, but so far I've done Pilates on Sunday, woke up at 5:45 am Monday morning to do Pilates before work, then walked/jogged 2 miles after work. Tuesday was not as good I was too tired that morning so I only did walking/jogging after work. Yesterday I did pilates and did pilates again today.

Plus I've given up on buying frozen meals. I normally cook a home cooked meal every day, but sometimes when I get home at 7pm, I'm too tired to cook, so I rely on my frozen food. So last Sunday I went back to cooking the way I grew up. I made two different meals to last the work week so I wouldn't have to cook when I got home. That has been a life saver. I did cook today, but only because I prepared the Chicken Kiev last night and it has to refrigerate for 24 hrs to get the maximum flavor. So we had Chicken Kiev and Risotto with Peas for supper.

Let's see I'm also drinking more tea. My favorite brand is Numi, out of Oakland, CA. The tea is fair trade, so the workers who farm the land get paid a fair wage and it's organic. My favorite is Gunpowder Green and Ruby Chai. My college roommate turned me on to this brand when she sent me a car package of things I can't get in middle America.

Oh we (me and my hubby) now have a regular sleep schedule, no more midnight sleeping for us. We try to get to bed by 11 now, which has helped me a lot, since I have to wake up at 6:10am. Oh and I switched to almost total online bill payment.

I think that's about it.

Have a great day!

Hey, SAM! Welcome to the world of bloggers.
I am guessing from your posts on Oliveplants blog who you are. But you can let me know on the family website if I am correct.
Good luck keeping up the exercise. That's a lofty goal, but worth it. I have never tried using my own money- or rather the loss of it- as a motivator, but I can see how that might work.

Well if you put your brand new anniversary ring on the line, I think it would be a great motivator for you. Trust me I saw it and that alone would motivate me to work out for the rest of my life.

Hey, Sam, this is fun! I hope you keep up the blogging.
I have heard or gyms using money as an incentive - people pay the membership fee, but every time they come in they get a partial refund - but I hadn't thought of doing it for myself. You sure are smart.
I think somehow or other I like to fail, so that I can be a martyr. >slaps self on forehead<
Working out is fun and it help in a lot of ways (emotional balance as well as physical health).
